Defend Forward Cyber Strategy

Our national Cyber Protection Teams (CPTs) are taking U.S. cyber defense beyond our borders.

As part of a defend forward operational concept, they’re being invited into other nation’s networks to find and shine a light on malware – to protect us all.

The effort is paying off. Top officials say that by working with partner nations to help secure their systems, U.S. Cyber Command is gaining important insights into advanced persistent threats, malware and adversarial actors.

But, as the Cyberspace Solarium Commission noted this year, there is a role for all of us here. One of defend forward’s goals is to increase the costs to adversaries of conducting malicious campaigns. Finding and exposing their malware is one way, but we need to reduce the perceived benefits of attacking the U.S. private sector. For instance, if organizations are resilient (if they can withstand and rapidly recover from a disruptive event), then adversary gains are reduced.
